120 Schools Reopens in Helmand

KABUL: (Middle East Press) The government is planning to reopen 120 schools which were closed due to instability in southern Helmand province.

Helmand education director said the schools will reopen in various parts of Helmand province for the next academic year, beginning two weeks later.

Speaking during a gathering in Lashkargah, the capital city of Helmand province, the provincial education director, said the schools had been closed due to instability and other security related issues.

He said the reopening of the schools would enable thousands of students to resume their education across Helmand province.

There are a total of 252 schools in Helmand province, where 163,000 students, including 33,000 girls have been studying, he added.

Helmand is among the volatile provinces in southern Afghanistan where Taliban militants are actively operating in its various districts and frequently carry out insurgency activities.
