2 Civilians dead, 2 injured in Kabul suicide attack

KABUL: (MEP) – Two civilians were killed and two others injured Friday in a suicide attack targeting a NATO convoy in eastern Kabul, the interior ministry’s spokesman said.

“According to initial reports, two civilians, including a woman, were killed and two men were wounded in the attack in Kabul,” Sediq Sediqqi said.

According to witnesses, the suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden car close to the Green Village, a hotel where officials working with the United Nations, contractors for NATO and US government personnel reside, dpa reported.

Another witness, a guard at the Green Village, said that the attack targeted two vehicles with NATO contractors as they were passing through.

He said the compound was not the target. But a Nepalese guard was slightly injured.

A NATO official confirmed the attack.

“I can confirm that a vehicle-borne improvised explosives device was detonated in Kabul today. One enemy was killed. As of now, there is no operational report on ISAF fatality,” Lieutenant Commander John Ripley, a spokesman for the NATO-led coalition told dpa.

He did not confirm or deny if any foreign troops were injured.

The Taliban in a statement claimed responsibility for the attack, saying, “Scores of foreign and domestic enemies were killed”.

Friday’s attack by the Taliban comes after months of lull in the Afghan capital.

In May last year, a number of Afghans and one Nepalese guard were killed when a squad of suicide bomber attacked the Green Village.
