MEP: At least 50 people have been slaughtered by a group of gunmen who went on a shooting spree, indiscriminately firing at residents in three villagers in the Central African Republic, AFP reports, citing witnesses who managed to escape the carnage.
Scores are believed to be injured as result of the attack in the central Bambari region, so far not claimed by any group.
Locals are blaming the predominantly Muslim UPC (The Union for Peace in Central Africa), a faction of the former Seleka rebel alliance.
However, a source within UPC has denied the claim, for its part, accusing another ex-Seleka faction, FPRC (the Popular Front for the Rebirth of the Central African Republic), of being behind the bloodshed.
The Central African Republic is still reeling from a civil war between Muslim and Christian militias that ended in 2016, with sporadic clashes between rival factions often erupting in the Bambari region.
