Russia, Syria Did Not Bomb Aid Convoy Near Aleppo

MEP: The Russian Defense Ministry announced Tuesday neither Russian nor Syrian aircraft bombed an aid convoy in Syria’s Aleppo.

Only the militants who control the area had information regarding the location of the convoy, the Ministry added.

At least 20 people were killed in the attack on trucks carrying desperately needed humanitarian relief to thousands of Syrians, according to Red Crescent.

“The air forces of Russia and Syria did not conduct any strikes against the UN aid convoy in the southwestern outskirts of Aleppo,” Defence Ministry spokesman, Igor Konashenkov said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies.

The Russian military had been looking at video footage from the scene and that there was no sign of the convoy being targeted by shells or an airstrike.

“We have closely studied the video footage from where the incident took place and we did not find any signs of any ammunition having hit the convoy. There are no craters, while the vehicles have their chassis intact and they have not been severely damaged, which would have been the case from an airstrike,” Konashenkov said.

The United Nations has suspended all aid convoys to Syria following the attack on aid trucks, which could amount to a “war crime”, according to UN official Jens Laerke.
