Pakistani journalist detained for 4 years in Afghanistan
KABUL: (Middle East Press) A Pakistani journalist has been transferred in jail to four years by an Afghan court after he was found guilty of travelling in Nangarhar province with illegal documentation.
A spokesman for the Embassy of Pakistan in Kabul, Akhtar Munir said, “A court in Nangarhar informed the embassy that Faizullah Khan, working for ARY News as a reporter, has been sentenced for four years imprisonment for entering Afghanistan with illegal documentation.”
Munir quoted by Pakistan Today said, Khan was arrested by security forces in the month of April.
he added “Afghan officials have informed Abrar Hussain, Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan, that Khan was arrested by police in Nangarhar province in April 2014 after he failed to prove that he had entered Afghanistan with proper documentation,”
Munir also added, “Khan had also been accused of spying but the court dropped those charges and instead found him guilty of unsuitable entry to Afghanistan.”
He said the embassy was pursuing the case and would provide legal support to Khan to secure his freedom.
According to Munir, the cabinet ministers from Nangarhar province were met by the ambassador and there are positive signs that Khan will be released.
But so far the Afghan security officials have not commented regarding the report.
