Karzai condemns shelling in Kabul military institute

KABUL: (Middle East Press) Afghan President Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned the attack on Afghan and foreign military instructors in Afghanistan’s National Military Academy.

Following a statement by Presidential Palace media office “Hamid Karzai described the attack on ANA staff and foreign trainers who were visiting the military academy installations and helping with the upsurge of Afghan security forces as an act by the enemies who don’t want to see Afghanistan have strong institutions.”

Officials in the ministry of defense said the incident took place around 12:00 pm local time at Afghan military academy, after a man dressed in military uniform opened fire on Afghan military staff and their foreign colleagues.

The officials further added that one foreign soldier was killed and a number of others including Afghan and foreign officers wounded.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force also confirmed that one ISAF service member was killed following the incident at The Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul city .

ISAF said the incident is under investigation and did not disclose further information regarding the identity of the dead service member, saying, “It is ISAF policy to suspend casualty identification to the related national authorities.”
