$27 Million USAID Support to Advance Electricity Delivery in Kandahar

KABUL: (Middle East Press) A new contract was signed between the “Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat” (DABS) and an international firm on Sunday to advance the electricity delivery in southern Kandahar province.

The new contract is part of a nationwide Power Transmission Expansion and Connectivity (PTEC) Program financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Dubai-headquartered Power Generation Solutions firm will manage the 4-year, $27.5 million Kandahar Management Support contract.

The contract will help DABS increase income collections by improving the company’s billing systems through the installation of tamper-proof digital meters in both homes and businesses.

James Hope, Acting USAID Mission Director, said “The long-term plan is for DABS to provide Afghanistan with power from less expensive sources and for users to pay for it.

USAID has helped DABS to obtain the technology, training, and the ability needed to give reliable and affordable electricity to the people of Afghanistan.”

The assistance will also help DABS create a network of customer service centers in Kandahar province and improve the general electricity distribution communications.
