Afghan lawmaker escapes suicide attack in Jalalabad city

KABUL: (MEP) – A heavy explosion was reported in Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province, near the Behsud Bridge on Thursday morning, local officials said.

Hazrat Hussain Mashriqwal, spokesman for the provincial security commandment, confirming the report said the suicide bomber detonated his explosives after Afghan security forces opened fire on him.

Mr. Mashriqwal further added that the suicide bomber was looking to target a member of the Afghan parliament Farid Momand, but he was recognized by Afghan security forces before he manage to attack the lawmaker.

He confirmed that only the suicide bomber was killed in the incident and there were other casualties.

Nangarhar is among the relatively peaceful provinces in eastern Afghanistan; however the Taliban militants have recently increased their insurgency activities in a number of its districts.

At least 2 Afghan police officers were killed and 3 others were injured after a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives near the Afghan intelligence compound in Pacher Agam district this morning.
