KABUL: (Middle East Press) Heavy clashes between Afghan security forces and the militants, left at least ten civilians dead and injured 28 others in northern Baghlan province, officials said on Wednesday.

The clashes erupted in Baghlan-i-Markazi district Wednesday afternoon.

Deputy Governor Abdul Qadim Niazai said eight militants were killed and five others wounded during a clearing operation in the district.

The operation was jointly conducted by Afghan National Army (ANA), Afghan National Police (ANP), National Directorate of Security (NDS) and special security units, he said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed killing nine soldiers and wounding 13 others during the clash.

A local elder Arbab Ghulam said: “Security forces and rebels were fighting head to head. Militants were pushed back and the area is currently under the control of security forces.”

Ghulam added that 1,200 families have been displaced to safer areas as a result of insecurity. The affected families were in urgent need of food.

Baghlan is one of the most insecure provinces of Afghanistan which is located in the north of the country where insurgents are frequently carry out insurgency activities and target civilians.
