Deadly Train Crash Leaves 100 Dead In India

MEP: At least 100 people have been killed with more than 150 others injured after 14 coaches of a passenger train rolled off the track in northern India on Sunday, police said.

The tragedy happened when most passengers were sleeping. 14 coaches of the Patna-Indore express train came off the track near Pukhrayan area in Kanpur Dehat district, according to railway officials.

It is the worst disaster since 2010 when a passenger train crashed into a freight train in the eastern state of West Bengal, killing 146 and injuring over 200.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Amid scenes of desperation and anguish, survivors were looking for family members and some were also trying to enter the damaged carriages to rescue relatives and collect belongings.

“As we know a major accident has happened in which the entire train turned turtle,” Daljit Singh Chawdhary, the additional police director general of Uttar Pradesh state, told AFP news agency.

“A lot of teams are currently there including local police, doctors and members of the National Disaster Response Force. The rescue operations are on.”

The injured were transported to local hospitals and the stranded passengers taken to a nearby station from where a special train would eventually take them to Patna.
