Egypt Church Bombing Kills At Least 21 Worshippers

MEP: At least 21 people have been killed and more than 50 others injured in an explosion that hit an area near a church in the northern Egyptian city of Tanta, sources say.

Video and pictures, reportedly showing the aftermath, show crowds gathered around bodies and large blood stains on the pews and church walls.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and the cause of the blast was not yet known.

Magdi Awad, head of the area’s ambulance service, confirmed the death toll.

It was the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt’s Christian minority, which makes up around 10 percent of the population and has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists.

Provincial governor Ahmad Deif told the state-run Nile channel: “Either a bomb was planted or someone blew himself up.”

A search is under way for any more explosives which could be in the vicinity.

Egypt has been facing violence due to terrorist attacks across the country in the past years. The Takfiri Velayat Sinai terrorist group has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.
