MEP: Officials in Women Affairs Department and human rights in Jawzjan province say insecurity, the armed opposition, lack of public knowledge about women’s rights and not punishing offenders have led that murder, suicide and violence against women in the province to increase then last year.
Najiba Quraishi, head of women’s affairs of Jawzjan province in an exclusive interview with Middle East Press said, since the beginning of 1395 the solar year, 96 cases of violence against women in the department registered of which 10 cases are murder and 6 cases are suicide of women and girls.
Quraishi added, in addition to these cases, 26 cases of contempt, two cases of running away from home, 10 cases of marriage prevention, 13 cases of assault, 13 cases of forced marriage, 1 case of prohibiting the seizure of personal property, 1 case of forced isolation, 10 cases of violence and 1 case of underage marriage has been registered in this office.
The main factors for the increase in suicides and killings are insecurity, the presence of armed opposition groups, the lack of public knowledge about women’s rights, stability of evil tradition in society and not letting girls and boys in the family, especially marriages decision, the source further added.
Although Ms. Quraishi calls Jawzjan province as an example of women’s participation in social and cultural activities in the north area of the country, but expressed concern on family court proceeding that led to the murder of women and girls.
Meanwhile, Maghferat Samimi president of the network of civil society organizations and head of human rights organizations in northern Jawzjan province despite raising concerns about honor killings and violence against women in the province, called for punishing the perpetrators.
