IEC reassures of on-time, inclusive elections

KABUL: (MEP) – The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has once again assured the elections would be held on scheduled time and that with transparency across the country.

IEC secretary Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail said in a press conference that the electoral body would make every effort for holding of fair elections as the polls would be decisive for the fate of Afghans.

“We assure you that the election commission has been making every effort for holding of transparent, fair and on-time elections,” Amarkhail said.

Also present at the event, deputy chief of election commission Abdul Rahman Hotaki said, “The 2014 election is very important to the lives of Afghans. This will be an important and peaceful transfer of political power taking place after 12 years through the votes of people.”

As announced, the elections for Presidential and Provincial Assembly seats are set to be held on April 5 of 2014, Ariana news reported.

However, security is considered the major challenge to the upcoming polls.

The IEC commissioner for Faryab said, “We are really concerned about the security situation of Faryab as it is deteriorating. I hope the security authorities will pay earnest attention in this respect.”
