IEC Says Taliban Warnings Will Not Stop Election Day

KABUL: (MEP) – In response to the Taliban organized attack on the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan’s regional office in Kabul on Tuesday, the IEC asked security institutions to strengthen security for IEC employees and polling stations as Election Day nears.

Election commission officials stated at the “Women and Elections” program that the Taliban will not succeed in sabotaging Election Day by targeting IEC offices. Less than ten days remain before Election Day.

“I advise terrorist organizations that your acts of terrorism will never undermine Election Day from occurring,” Deputy Head of Election Commission of Afghanistan Abdul Rahman Hotaki said.

In his speech today, IEC Secretary Chief Zia-Ul-Haq Amarkhail said that equality and transparency of the elections is related to security.

“When there is no security, the election commission is weak at the polling station,” Amarkhail said. “Without security the election monitor will not be able to supervise the station effectively. Security will keep role on the transfer of election materials and voters, making sure the process moves smoothly.”

The election commission has reassured the public on the impartiality of IEC workers and has forbid them from meddling in the election process.

The election commission confirmed that 3.7 million people received their voting cards in which 1.2 million constitute of women.
