At Least 62 Syrian Soldiers Killed In US Airstrikes

MEP: US-led coalition jets have reportedly targeted the Syrian government forces’ positions near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor, killing 62 soldiers, SANA news agency said.

The Saturday air strikes took place by two F-16s and two A-10s, the Syrian Army General Command told the state television.

Meanwhile, the US Defence Department said that Australian aircraft were also involved in the US-led coalition operation which killed dozens of Syrian soldiers who were apparently mistaken for Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terror group.

“Australian aircraft were among a number of international aircraft taking part in this Coalition operation,” the Defence Department said in a statement.

“Australia would never intentionally target a known Syrian military unit or actively support Daesh. Defence offers its condolences to the families of any Syrian personnel killed or wounded in this incident.”

Sixty-two Syrian soldiers were killed and over 100 injured in the airstrike by the US-led coalition, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Major-General Igor Konashenkov also confirmed the attack, citing information received from the Syrian General Command.

The Syrian General Command has called the bombing a “serious and blatant aggression” against Syrian forces, and said it was “conclusive evidence” that the US and its allies support ISIS militants, RT reported.
