Children sold for 2000 Afghani in Kunduz

KABUL: (MEP) – In a shocking incident, a poverty stricken family has reportedly sold their two children for 2000 Afghani.

Poverty and lack of employment has caused serious economic challenges in many remote regions of the country over the past 12 years and children being sold are not a new occurrence in these difficult areas.

Some families, in conditions of abject poverty and desperation have been known to sell their children off so that they do not starve to death.

Officials working closely on this issue have said, “We are applying great efforts to ensure these occurrences do not take place but most of these cases happen without our knowledge.”

Head of Work and Social Affairs department, Zahir Azimi said, “If only we had advance information on this case, we would certainly have provided required help to the family to prevent them from entering into such a deal.”

This report comes at a time when the Department for Children’s Rights has questioned the availability of alternatives for families suffering because of their poor economic conditions. Governing authorities certainly need to provide much needed answers.
