Fight against drug trafficking in Afghanistan needs joint efforts of region countries: Jean-Luc
KABUL: (MEP) – “Fight against drug trafficking from Afghanistan requires joint efforts of countries in the region,” UNODC Regional Representative for Afghanistan and Neighboring Countries Jean-Luc Lemahieu said today at the 2nd trilateral meeting of Ministers of Drug Control Agencies of Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, 24 news agency reported.
According to him, it is necessary to exclude isolated, self-contained approach to the issue. Joint efforts are required. Short-term solutions are unstable. Countries should be responsible for region as a whole, because Afghanistan is a big challenge for the economies of its neighbors. Complex approach to the problem is needed; countries should work in the same direction and structure.
As it was noted, illegal drug trafficking concerns everybody. Drug control institutions were quite effective. However, the problem is still not resolved and there are specific reasons for it. One of them is the political economy in the entire region. It is necessary to look for additional sources of financing for solution of the problem.
