German Embassy and UN: Kabul Rape Criminals Must Not Execute
KABUL: (Middle East Press) the embassy of Germany and the United Nations in Kabul has called on Afghan government not to perform death sentence on Kabul gang rape criminals.
The Embassy of Germany said following an online statement, “terrible crimes occuredin Paghman but death punishment does not deter such behavior. Urge Afghan Government not to implement death sentences,”
It said, “The death sentence is a cruel and inhuman punishment and any miscarriage of justice will be permanent.”
“We are disappointed that the Supreme Court of Afghanistan this week affirmed the death sentences given to five people and sentenced one additional person to death on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and gang rape in a recent case in Paghman, in Kabul province.
While this was a horrible crime, we have been concerned about the lack of due process and the failure to obey with national and international fair trial standards in the proceedings,” the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said following a statement.
Furthermore “This risks denying proper justice to both the fatalities and the accused, and also undermines efforts to strengthen the rule of law and administration of justice in Afghanistan.”
The statement also added that the High Commissioner opposes the death punishment in all situations, including for such dreadful crimes, and especially when fair trial safeguards have not been met.
