Imported electricity not useful for industries: economy minister

KABUL: (MEP) – The import of electricity has not been effective for the country’s economic growth and the industries, said the minister of economy on Tuesday.

During the installation of 9 power transformers in Paghman district of Kabul, Minister Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal urged on next five-year economic plan and said electricity production was a basic need of the country.

Da Afghanistan Brishna Shirkat (DABS) installed 9 electricity transformers in Paghman costing 40 million Afghanis. The officials said about 1,200 families would be provided with electricity.

Though the power extension has had significant growth across the country, it is not reliable since much of country’s electricity was being imported, Arghandiwal said.

“We must not be dependent on imported energy. We must focus on electricity production as it is a strong need of our industries.”

Declining the propagandas over possible deterioration of economic situation, minister of economy hoped the economic growth would continue as past.

“No doubt Afghanistan over the past eleven years has had an average of 9 percent increase in economic growth. I am sure the economic growth will continue in the future.”
