Most Polling Centers Facing Threats Will Be Open on Election Day: MoIA

KABUL: (MEP) – Most of the 390 polling centers which were previously to be closed due to security threats will be open on election day, the Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoIA) said on Saturday.

The MoIA’s Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi says in a press conference in Kabul on Saturday that the security of most of the 390 has been solid and a new report on polling centers’ security will be released on Sunday.

“We are trying to provide security for more polling centers on the Election Day. Tomorrow the new list will be released which shows that the number of polling centers which previously faced security threats has decreased,” he said.

Previously, the MoI submitted an assessment to election officials indicating that out of the 6,645 total polling stations, 414 in various parts of the country would likely remain closed due to security threats.

The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) has announced that they were ready to transfer election materials to the provinces.

“All the important materials of the elections are ready. The first materials will be transferred 25 days before the Election Day and the second parts will be sent a week before holding of the elections to the polling centers,” said Noor Mohammad Noor, the IEC spokesman.

“We have spoken with security organizations about security of the materials,” he said.

The Afghan Presidential and Provincial Council elections are expected to hold on April 5.
