Plight of majority of Afghan women concerns UNFPA
KABUL: (MEP) – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has expressed concerns over growing instances of violence against Afghan women and said that nearly 87% of them face violence and have to endure physical labor.
UNFPA and the Embassy of Japan in Kabul have provided $ 2 million for women to have access to legal services in the country.
This program has been implemented in Ghor, Faryab, Badghis, Jawzjan, Balkh, Heart and Farah. Police women have been trained and are now in a position to respond effectively to instances of violence against women.
The Deputy Ambassador of Japan in Kabul has said, “We need to build capacity to prevent violence against women and to build Judicial Institutions in the provinces.”
Meanwhile, officials in the Ministry of Interior have reported 680 cases of violence against women in the current year.
Violence against women has been the primary concern of national and international aid agencies over the past 12 years.
