President Ghani: Parliamentary Elections To Take Place Next Summer

KABUL: (MEP) President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah have met with the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) and on Tuesday they prepared for the Parliamentary and Provincial Councils elections between summer and fall seasons of next year.

During the meeting with ERC members President Ghani urged for quick improvements in electoral bodies and in the holding of parliamentary and district council elections.

President Ghani said: The [parliamentary] election will be held between next summer and fall.

Originally, the parliamentary elections was scheduled to be held in Spring this year, however, it was delayed due to reforms that was agreed upon by the unity government leaders after a presidential election last year that was marred by accusations of mass fraud.

Fahim Dashti, one member of the committee said the president vowed that government will not interfere in selection committee’s affairs and will prepare the ground for its work.

President Ghani also insisted that the Selection Committee should act independently as per the law and must consider merit in their performance in a transparent way.
