Prisoners’ releases will likely boost insurgents’ morale, say activists

KABUL: (MEP) – A number of human rights activists strongly oppose release of inmates from Bagram Jail, saying it is a clear violation of human rights.

The cases of released detainees were not reviewed carefully and it would strengthen the morale of the militants, said the spokesman of Human Rights Commission.

Rafeeullah Bedar said the released inmates would once again join the ranks of the Taliban.

These statements were expressed after the government released 650 prisoners that were detained by the international forces.

“We are concerned about the release of the inmates. We fear they may once again join insurgency. And we have witnessed such cases in the past,” said AIHRC spokesman Rafeeullah Bedar.

Similarly, a number of civil society activists believe the release of such dangerous detainees can result in the increase of suicide bombers.

“Unfortunately, the prisoners that have been released in the past have joined back violence and insurgency. I strongly believe that these released inmates will again continue fighting against the government,” said Meer Ahmad Joyenda, a civil society activist.
