Poland promises post-2014 assistance to Afghanistan

KABUL: (MEP) – Polish Ambassador to America has said his country was committed to continue assisting Afghanistan for a long-term after its combat role will be ended by 2014.

Despite controversies between Afghanistan and US on security deal and as well as NATO’s warning of quitting Afghanistan, the Polish government has announced its continued support of Afghanistan.

“The Polish soldiers will return home by the end of 2014 but the country won’t abandon Afghanistan,” said Ryszard Schnepf, the Polish Ambassador to Washington.

He added the Polish troops under NATO command would leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014 but the assistance to economic areas would be continued for a long time.

“Poland has close friendship with Afghanistan. We have exchanged views in every area, especially in difficult times to resolve the problems. Our future efforts will focus more on civilian and we will try to have all Afghan citizens benefited from our assistance.”

Based on the Lisbon decision, the Polish troops should leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014. However, the continued presence of these forces will be possible after a new agreement with Kabul.
