State Of Emergency Declared In Charlotte As One Shot During Rally

MEP: One person has been shot during fuming protests in North Carolina’s Charlotte as the government has declared a state of emergency in the city sending in the National Guard.

The protests was hurled against the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, 43 an American-African man on Tuesday.

According to officials, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

The City of Charlotte initially tweeted the person had died, but later corrected that the person was on life support.

Pat McCrory, the North Carolina governor, declared a state of emergency and said the National Guard and state highway patrol troopers would be deployed.

The latest trouble began with a peaceful rally that turned violent after several hundred chanting demonstrators marched through downtown with brief stops at a black church, police headquarters and a large entertainment venue called the EpiCentre.

“No Justice, No Peace,” shouted the demonstrators as they clashed with heavily-armed police officers in riot gear.

There were conflicting reports about how Scott was killed with police alleging that he was armed, ignored police order, and hurt 16 officers.

Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney did not identify the person shot or the origin of the gunfire but city officials said on Twitter that the shot was fired by one civilian at another, not by police.
