UN Insists on Israel to pay Lebanon $850mn
KABUL: (Middle East Press) The United Nations has espoused a resolution, urging Israel to pay Lebanon in excess of USD 850 million for causing an “environmental disaster”.
The UN General Assembly approved the non-binding resolution tremendously on Friday.
As many as 170 countries voted in favor of the resolution, six countries said “no” and three abstained.
Tel Aviv is obliged to pay the amount for an oil fall the regime caused in July 2006 during its war on Lebanon.
Israeli warplanes attacked Lebanon’s oil storage tanks during the war which led to extensive pollution that covered the whole Lebanese seaboard and was extended to the Syrian coastline.
Tel Aviv launched wars on Lebanon in 2000 and 2006. About 1,200 Lebanese, most of them civilians, have lost their lives in the 33-Day War of 2006.
